Calle 8: Playa's New Culinary Hot Spot

Playa del Carmen is a fast growing beach town in the Riviera Maya that welcomes both tourists and new residents who wish to start a new life in paradise. Every day, hundreds of thousands of locals and tourists walk the streets of Playa del Carmen looking for a nice spot to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner; to do some shopping; to find the perfect spot to grab a coffee; to walk their dogs; or simply just to enjoy a pleasant stroll along the world-famous 5th Avenue.

There's another downtown street that's been getting more and more attention over the past couple of years due to its reputable and delightful restaurants, fabulous hotels and beach clubs, its charming and unique French style café, and its fantastic rooptop pool terraces with superb ocean views... Meet Calle 8!

Calle 8 is located right in the heart of Playa del Carmen. The downtown part of this street extends from the white sand beach out to City Hall. You'll find fabulous gems while walking along Calle 8, like Maison Pierre: a lovely french style café that features delicious and colorful Macarons, authentic coffee from Veracruz, delightful French and Mexican pastries and a delectable breakfast and lunch menu. Maison Pierre even has a tiny version of the "Pont des Arts de Paris", where you can hang your own padlock for you and your significant other!

The astounding Thompson Beach House, with its incredible beach front restaurant that's open to the public, is the perfect spot for a romantic dinner or lunch facing the Caribbean Sea. The phenomal menu here will entice you!

The Carmen Hotel is one of the new kids on the block (like Maison Pierre and Patio 8). The spectacular ocean views from its rooftop pool area will take your breath away. The rooftop pool is also open to the public and you can spend the day enjoying cocktails, live DJ music, astounding ocean views and a lovely sea breeze.

Mi Pueblo, an authentic Mexican restaurant (by the reputable Grupo Azotea), is located on the corner of 5th Avenue and Calle 8. It's the perfect spot to enjoy traditional Mexican cuisine while taking in all of the action on 5th Avenue.

On the other corner of 5th and Calle 8, is the unique and spectacular Frida Kahlo Restaurant, which serves Mexican fusion cuisine in a unique and artistic setting. The restaurant will soon launch its very own Frida Kahlo museum!

The trendy Patio 8 restaurant and bar is another new kid on the block (also by Grupo Azotea). Not only will its design catch your eye, but its tasty menu and tempting cocktail and wine list will seduce you. Ask you waiter about the secret entrance to their exclusive new night club...!

The Palms hotel features splendid views overlooking the ocean and downtown, as well as a phenomenal pool and Jacuzzi area where you can spend the day. Their menu is fresh and the cocktails will make you never want to leave... (Ask about their Day Pass policy)

Located right below the Palm Hotel is the Sabor a Miel restaurant (part of the hotel), known for the authentic seafood flavor of the Mexican Caribbean with a Mediterranean twist. They have live music on some nights and big screen TVs so that you can watch you favorite soccer team play while enjoying refreshing cocktails and finger-licking seafood tostadas.

If you are visiting Playa del Carmen, or if you are a local resident and haven't been to Calle 8 yet, or haven't been back since the all the new culinary hot spots and fabulous rooftop pools and beach clubs opened, or if you haven't tried the newest and trendiest French spot yet, with its unique touch of Veracruz and its delicious French and Mexican pastries.... don't wait any longer!! We promise you won't regret discovering and experiencing all the gems of Calle 8!
