Chicago The Musical in Playa del Carmen
On May 19, 20 and 21, Explayarte will present its tenth production: the Broadway musical Chicago featuring more than 30 artists and a live orchestra. This is your chance to see Chicago live at the beautiful Teatro de la Ciudad (City Theater) located right here in Playa del Carmen!
One of the most successful musical comedies in recent years, Chicago is based on a 1926 play by Maurine Dallas Watkins and set in Prohibition-era Chicago. It tells the story of two women who find themselves behind bars at Cook County Jail, which is presided over by the corrupt Matron “Mama” Morton. When Chicago’s slickest lawyer turns their cases into a media circus, neither woman will be outdone in their fight for fame and celebrity.
Explayarte opened its doors in 2003 as the first music school in Playa del Carmen, teaching areas like music, performing arts, visual arts and sound engineering, and has been hosting musical theater workshops for the past six years. Previous Explayarte productions include Hairspray, Pippin, Aida, Los Miserables, Jesus Christ Super Star, Annie, All Shook Up, Seussical, and Cats.
At the recent press conference for Chicago The Musical, Luis Ernesto López Vargas, director of Explayarte, commented that this production is an opportunity for students to showcase their talents in a professional manner.
The donation program “Yo invite a teatro” together with Explayarte and local tour operator Alltournative will provide free admission for around 200 young people from vulnerable communities. The local senior citizens choir will also be attending free of charge.
