Akumal was actually the first community on the coast to have been developed for tourism, long before Cancun, and for this reason, there is pretty much no room for the large hotels and chain stores, which helps to retain Akumal’s local charm.
Akumal means “place of the turtle” in Maya, and has beautiful bays full of sea turtles and tropical marine life. It’s perfectly located just 20 minutes from Tulum and Playa del Carmen, making it the perfect base for enjoying the Riviera Maya's many attractions.
