Paper Plane: The Soundtrack for a Starry Beach

As far back as he can remember, music has always been a part of his life, of his soul. Singing from a very young age and being part of a band were his first steps towards a dream he would one day start to build in a small beach town called Playa del Carmen. Alongside friends and fellow musicians Rodrigo Grasetti, Anibal Canolik and Marcelo Rivas, together they created Paper Plane.

Matias, the lead singer of Paper Plane, arrived in Mexico in 2008. He first stepped foot in Cancun, but it was Playa del Carmen where he decided he would be calling this beach town home. Playa del Carmen has this je-ne-sais-quoi that also attracted all the other members of the band, some of them arriving more than 15 years ago, from Argentina and Uruguay.

Over the years, this tourist town became home for more than 215,000 people. Local artists and musicians often face a reality that forces them to choose between playing for tourism (hotels, weddings, bar venues) or for an audience that's ready to welcome an original band and craving for authentic music that comes right from the gut.

Of course, they all had to start from the beginning. Some of them first played in hotels, while others would try to find themselves in different genres, in different styles, in different venues. All of these different paths would eventually merge into what would soon be called Paper Plane.

The roots and influences of each member of the band are distinct, yet they complete each other. When I had the incredible opportunity to tag along with the band on their weekly visit to Tulum, on the private beach and intimate venue of the Be Tulum Hotel for their Acoustic Sessions, I was able to feel those amazing differences, to musically feel each member's background. The final sound, the harmony of all of them together, is simply magic.

Anibal Canolik, percussion and drums

Marcelo Rivas, Piano and accordion

Ricardo Grasetti, Guitar and bass

Matias Da ViĆ”, Lead singer and guitar

All of this magic blends with the spectacular scenery of Tulum's tranquil beach. The feeling of soft white sand under your toes while tapping your foot to the rhythm of the acoustic music is a sensation that needs to be experienced.

The band has been working hard, thoroughly and closely to create their own final identity, but in the meantime, it is on the wooden stage of the Be Tulum, facing the moon and ocean, that they present their Acoustic Sessions with redefined and revisited covers, as part of their running period. Their music influences are tangible: folk, indie, rock, classic and sometimes a hint of electronic. I would share a few titles of the covers that the band experiments with on stage and that blew my mind when I heard them, but I do not want to spoil any part of their unique and inspiring work in progress.

While we wait for the exciting release of original songs by the band Paper Plane before the general public, you can make the trip to Tulum at the Be Tulum Hotel, every Monday at 7:30 pm. You will be one of the lucky few to witness the birth and growth of a band that's waiting for the perfect moment to enter the big world and the big stage.
