West Side Story The Musical in Playa del Carmen
On July 5 and 6 at 7:30pm, A Pasión Arte Teatro will present its latest musical production, West Side Story, at the beautiful City Theater right here in Playa del Carmen!
The story is set in the Upper West Side neighborhood of New York City in the mid 1950s. Inspired by William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, it explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds—the Sharks, from Puerto Rico, and the Jets, a white gang. The young protagonist, Tony, a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang's leader falls in love with Maria, the sister of the leader of the Sharks. (Wikipedia)
A Pasión Arte Teatro is a nonprofit organization created with the aim of achieving personal, cultural, artistic and social development in Playa del Carmen's youth through musical theater, and providing a place for everyone regardless of race, sex, age, religion, sexual orientation or special ability.
The organization offers programs for Playa del Carmen kids ages 8-12 and 13 and over, including Broadway Kids, A Pasión Arte Danza and A Pasión Arte Teatro. Past A Pasión Arte theater productions include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Seussical, Charlie Brown and Friends, Broadway Cabaret, Pippen and more.
On Sunday June 23 from 2pm to 7pm, Restaurant Latitude 20° +/- will host a fun family style BBQ Fest as a fundraiser for A Pasión Arte Teatro's upcoming production of West Side Story. There will be all kinds of delicious BBQ favorites, including pulled pork, ribs, jerk chicken, smoked sausage, coleslaw, baked beans, potato salad, and more. The cost is $350 pesos per person (cash bar).
